Bloomberg Government News provides comprehensive insights tailored to professionals who influence government decisions. Our challenge was to elevate the brand’s promise by enhancing value perception and increasing overall engagement through a next-gen news, data, analytics, and workflow platform.

The existing BGOV user experience held untapped potential, with numerous features and data dispersed throughout the application. We aimed to simplify, organize, and leverage these elements to create a more user-friendly and engaging platform.

We pursued a strategy of radical simplicity, aiming to avoid information overload and clutter. By understanding user behavior, we prioritized redesigning the marketing page, homepage and article page. Introducing story packages allowed us to group relevant content, encouraging deeper exploration.

The drop-down navigation menus contain a list of subsections, a short description explaining the section, and links to a features page and tutorial video (Image on the left).

The News Topics drop-down menu powers the dashboard and can be adjusted from the main navigation bar. Users can manage topics, select or mute topics, and remove them from the main news feed. More in-depth controls, including adding new topics and managing email alerts, are contained on a single page and can be accessed by selecting “click here” (Image on the right).

The search experience starts with a text input. As a user types a keyword, the predictive results are displayed.

Article page layout shows the combination of typefaces, including applying the various weights for the visual hierarchy. A Quick Fix at the top tells readers the most updated and relevant news. Discover More module can be used on any article page, providing contextual hooks more profound into the system.

Related Articles is a module that sits at the end of an article; this provides recirculation back into the BGOV site and can also be used for curated stories. A gradient map overlay applies a color tone to images, applying a branded color treatment. Finally, the BGOV podcast is always visible at the bottom and allows the audience to listen to the most updated news.

We created a simple icon style with thin strokes and rounded cap corners. They are used sparingly and not applied for every action when word use would suffice. The page grid adapts based on each device screen. A consistent grid system implemented throughout the experience will ensure optimal legibility.

Mobile experiences are another aspect of a successful digital strategy. Tablet, mobile, and wearable devices create seamless and immediate portability across channels. We ensure that single sign-on is truly single across devices and sync the user’s preferences and “where they left off” as they hop between mobile and the more comprehensive web experience.

The Share panel on the desktop outputs a custom email. The email appears to carry both a custom message from the sender and a branded headshot of the sender. The articles selected appear stacked, showing the headline and opening. Related Articles are stacked under the shared items, although this is a flexible module.

Result

The redesigned BGOV now delivers a more user-friendly experience, facilitating easier access and utilization of information for professionals. Consistent BGOV branding across all pages ensures a unified and recognizable appearance. A responsive grid system ensures optimal legibility across various device screens, enhancing user accessibility. The outcome is a next-generation news platform that not only meets but exceeds our audience’s expectations, providing them with a valuable tool for navigating the complexities of government-related information.
